There's an option under sounds that says something like, 'play sounds when WoW is in background'. It works when I play in windowed mode. Not sure about tabbing out. JUst go to your Sound options and check the box that says "Sound in Background." It will play all the normal sounds even when minimized or alt-tabbed.

Fullscreen (Windowed) giving me black screen when I click out of wow. Before Pre-Patch, I was able to move my mouse to my second monitor and click somewhere without any issues.
